Almost no
other heroine of the bible has been so often represented by
artists as Mary of Magdala. She was devoted to Jesus, following
Him from
the city of Magdala, through Galilee, Samaria and Judaea to Jerusalem.
She was the last to leave the cross and the first to be at the
grave.
Some sources
credit Mary Magdalene as being an active principal in the
discipleship of Christ, saying that "she was as woman who
knew the All."
She is also viewed by many as an archetype of the eternal aspect
of
the feminine, which Christ revealed to her through His love.
Many myths
exist about Mary Magdalene. One tells of when she travelled to
Rome to explain Jesus' resurrection to Tiberius Caesar. During
her audience she
held up an egg to symbolically explain the resurrection. Caesar
laughed, telling
her that one had as much chance of resurrection as the egg in
her hand turning
red. Whereupon, the egg turned red. Some credit this myth as the
source for
why eggs are colored at Easter.
