Day 5 - FINA World Championship- August 08, 2006
August 08, 2006
by Jeff Strahota

Greetings again from the land of the Terminator (not Jim and Ellen, so Noble, no worries :-) )...

A report of Day's 3 and 4 follows, but first a quick report on day 5 (today). The super-curvey Lombard Street part of San Francisco is frickin cool. And even young redwood trees are frickin tall! If you're wondering why there was no swimming today, there was, but today was only relays. Seeing as how our team couldnt muster up enough of a team for a relay, we decided we'd do some touring.

Okie Dokie... One thing we're noticing about the meet is that the efficiency seems to change all the time - day to day and as the day goes on. Maybe it was the folks that bailed on the 400 IM, allowing the event to finish early, or it was just the people in charge, but Sunday's session was running quick, organized and certainly not the clusterF/chaos it became at the end. Monday, despite finishing the 50 free's almost 90 minutes behind schedule, everything was quite organized.

On to the swimming, first, the Women's 200 free featuring Terrapin Mollie Grover. She took off like one of Bill Shipp's Bats out of Hell, mowing down several members of her heat, and ended up with a huge time drop for '06 with a 2:16.53, finishing 8th place in the world for W25-29.

On the Men's side of the same age group, Jeff Strahota charged out of the gate to lead the heat from start to finish, finishing well ahead of the field with 2:12.12. That time was an amazing 5 1/2 second drop off his previous personal best, and additionally a huge jump in the final standings from 41st to 29th.

By the time the 50 fly came around, everyone was running around like crazy men and women in speedos trying to get behind the blocks on time. It seemed like everyone was having best times, including myself, managing to drop nearly .7 seconds to a 29.42, and 48th place finish. It may have been that fly, but both Mollie and I felt like we were flying through the pool - it was a really fast day!

Monday - Oh what a tedious day!! The Northern California morning fog was hanging around like tht annoying girl (or guy) at the bar for most of the morning, and it was rather frigid on deck. But as for that day's Terrapin Masters events, my 27.56 proves I am not a sprinter.

Thats all for today! More after the meet ends on Thursday! Check the realtime results for:

Emad in the 100 back and 200 fly on Wednesday and the 50 back on Thursday
Mollie in the 100 back on Wednesday and the 50 back on Thursday
Jeff in the 400 Free on Thursday
