On Sunday, the 2006 Terrapin Masters' Chesapeake Bay team endeavored to cross 4.4 miles of choppy water between the spans of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. And guess what? We had a clean sweep! Everybody crossed that puppy!
Now, you know what's extra special? Mr. David Larson made it to the podium. That's right, David placed second overall in the men's 65 to 69 year old age group! Awesome, awesome! Funny thing is, ol' Dave was saying that he had some concerns about making the voyage -- and he ends up with a trophy! Guess we'll have to start asking Larson how to swim in the open waters! (Of course, if a guy like Dave wins the "Cheryl Wagner Manic Practicer Award" for his training routine in preparation for the event, he's likely to do just fine!)
Another guy doing phenomenally well is Craig Dewing. Craig was the team's highest placed finisher overall -- and placed third in the men's 35 to 39 year old category. Man, can that guy swim long distance! (MLee was picking his brain at the Terrapin Banquet -- and it helped him cross that body of water, too!)
Marica Smith, "Diva" Diana Corbin, Jeff "Muppet" Strahota and Carolyn Voorhees now have two notches under their belts for their 2006 crossings of the Bay. Nothing like having more numbers in the win column!
First time crossers, in addition to David Larson, were Barney Lynch and Curt Reynolds. They, like the rest of us, looked like tired dogs once they made it across to the other side! But. They. Made. It.
I gotta tell you, I love that Bay swim. Where was Ed "Brick" Switzer? Anyone know? "Big Tuna" Noble Jarrell was the team's lone representative to take up the one mile event.
Photos will posted shortly to the website, compliments of Cheryl Wagner. Cheryl Wagner, Mollie Grover, and Michael Lee all captured the team rather nicely during various stages of the event. Not only that, but Grover has several enchanting shots of the Bay Bridge. I think I'll use one for a screen saver.
Best to the 2006 Terrapin Masters Bay Team! Give them at pat on the back when you see them at the pool!
Emails are flying in! Jane Strachan swam the one miler too! Apologies! Great job, Jane!
Best,
Michael Lee
