No I have not supported a swim I've never had to rescue anyone while kayaking but if the need arises, I'll do what is necessary I plan to rent a sea kayak as the one I have (acadia) is small w/out a rutter...so I can't answer your question at the moment. Can you recommend an outfitter in town?
21. Harry Megaw (for Sue Wilkinson Megaw)
Radio: I will have a Marine VHF Radio--call sign, BANANA BOAT ONE, for after all it is a yellow (visiblity), Ocean Kayak, and its ugly, and it looks like a squashed banana, unlike the graceful and sleek sit-in kayaks. Experience: Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, 28.5 miles. Tampa Bay Marathon Swim, 24 miles. St. Croix Marathon Swim, 10 miles (with Force 4 Winds) Potomac River Swim, 8 miles (three times) Swim for Life, 5 miles (two times) Atlantic City 10K Swim (two times, with a rescue for hypothermia: swimmer from Spain) Countless bay, river, and lake long distance training swims, in water as cold as 54 degrees. Special Skills: I am a Register Nurse (Lic. in VA and MD), with Emergency Room and Critical Care training and experience. I am CPR/AED Certified. I work in the Medical Center at the Pentagon. I am a registed U.S. Masters Swimmer. I swam competitively in age group, high school and college, with years of Life Guard Training and Experience. I am a Registered Certified Swim Coach, Level II, with the American Swim Coaches Association. I have coached at all levels, including Open Water and Triathletes.
I will carry a spare life vest and a floatation cushion, which can be thrown by rope, plus, besides food and water for Sue, I will carry extra food and fluids to be offered to any other swimmer (or kayaker) who may need it. And I will carry two emergeny rescue blankets for warming if anyone needs to be pulled for chills and/or hypothermia. I will have plenty of high frutose and glucose Goo for any episodes of hypoglycemia--kayakers or swimmers.
TWO SEAT, SIT ON TOP, OCEAN KAYAK, which I believe to be the "ideal" kayak for swimmer escort and safety--but I kayak only for swimmer escort, and recognize why other kayakers might have boats for a broader range of reasons. I also see that most kayakers (bless them all, for open water swimming would be extremely dangerous without them), got into swimmer escort through the sport of kayaking. I am the odd one here. I got into kayaking specifically to do swimmer escort. So I paddle the the Ocean Kayak so I can actually put a troubled swimmer on/in the kayak (which I have done on occasion), and it does not take on water and it will not sink. The down side is there is much more work involed in getting it through high winds, requiring a higher level of strength, fitness, and endurance, because it is not exactly a streamlined boat.
22. Wythe Michael (for Courtney Moates Paulk)
All conditions up to moderate chop. I have experience kayaking in the ocean, in southwest Florida and in freshwater river conditions (upper James) No VHF I have not supported a swim before I have not done a kayak rescue before but lifeguarded at Va Beach years ago I need to rent a kayak

No, I don't No, I have never done this before I've done them at SK102 last year and this year, and I was very comfortable in Lake Anna. Sirroco, 17', yellow yes!
31. Gary Schuerfeld (sweep)
I've paddled in Force 6 (Beaufort) sea states, and it was miserable! However, I'm sure the conditions would be nowhere near that for the swimmers, so I'm guessing that the wind blowing 4-6 knots (Beaufort 2) would be the max conditions for the swim. I'm ok with that. Yep, I have a VHS radio (like you, it's my second one - after the one I dropped overboard!) And yes, I keep this one on a lanyard; I've helped out on various swims including the Potomac Swim. The longest being a couple of 2 mile swims while living in RI. I've also done a couple lake swims in South Carolina, and one swim in Savannah, GA.; I am very comfortable doing kayak rescues, for either other kayakers, or swimmers Depending on the weather, I'd either use my Current Designs Gulfstream (white hull, white deck)), or my Current Designs Extreme (white hull, yellow deck); No
