New Terrapin SCY Records
Oct 31, 2003
by MLee

In October, five Terrapins broke six of the team's short course yard records while narrowly missing two others. For 19 to 24 year olds, Kelly Bowman erased one of the longest held records in the 200 free (Laura Antonietta, 1994) with a time of 2:02.21, dropping the record time by over two seconds. In the 100 free, Kelly narrowly missed Erin Galloway's record time of 56.83 with a time of 56.97. Meanwhile in the 50 backstroke, Meredith Stakem crushed Erin's two year old 50 back record by nearly a second with a time of 30.49. Over in 19 to 24 year old men, newcomer Steve Cartwright set a new 50 fly record with a time of 27.37. Get set for some new long distance free records out of Steve this session.

In the older, but not much wiser 35 to 39 year old men category, perennial favorite Emad Elshafei gained additional team records in the 50 and 100 fly, with respective times of 27.28 and 1:00.41. Nevertheless, the 100 IM record eluded Mr. Elshafei, though swimming a respectable 57.97 very early in the season. The 35 to 39 year old men's 100 IM record is currently held by Michael Lee with a time of 57.43 -- the fastest unconverted 100 IM time for any of the age groups. Be set to see the likes of James Crowder, Mike Doane, Emad Elshafei, and Michael Goodison swim MLee down to determine who will be the new "King of the 100 IM" for the 2003 - 2004 swim session.

Additionally, a new record was set in the 50 yard freestyle by Robert Costello III in the 60 to 64 age group. Mr. Costello swam a 30.33 and looks to break that thirty second barrier.

These, the other team records, and Terrapin Master's top times are posted in the newly created team records section of the Terrapin Master's website.
