The short course meter season culminates with a trip to Piscataway, New Jersey during the first weekend of December where the SCM Zones championships will again be held at the Rutgers campus. A dozen Terrapins are expected to make their way north to participate in the meet with high expectations that more than just several of the team's records will be decimated.
Preceding the championship meet in Rutgers, a little, local area "Lox & Bagel meet" was held November 16, 2003. A handful of beloved Terrapins participated in the short course meter meet's swims, establishing and driving records down in four age groups:
Deborah Morrin-Nordlund dropped her previous 100 meter backstroke record set earlier in the season by over seven seconds! What an improvement! Her time of 1:38.40 is now the time to beat for 40 to 44 year old women. Hubby Eric Nordlund must have been overwhelmed not only with Deb's time, but as well as by the couple's unopposed re-election as Potomac Valley Masters Swimming office holders.
Cheryl Wagner just missed beating her team record in the 200 free. And - holy cow! - talk about just missing records! Mike Doane missed capturing the Men's 30 to 34 year old 50 record by two one-hundredths of a second with a time of 25.71! Doane moreover made another remarkable swim in the 50 fly, breaking Mike Goodison's old record by .75 seconds with his goggles filled with water and hanging from his face at the race's start! Mike Doane managed to claim the record while taking a single shortened fly stroke to pull the ill fitting goggles off his face in the middle of the race to swim a 27.84 second short course 50 meter fly.
Robert Costello III establishes yet another 50 free record for the team in the 50 freestyle for 60 to 64 year old men with a time of 34.94. Well done, "Trey"! And Michael Lee put up new times up for 35 to 39 year old men in five events: 50, 100, 200 breast, 50 fly, and 100 IM.
These and all the SCM record are available on the Terrapin website!
