Sean began coaching Terrapin Masters in the Summer of 1997 and lives in Silver Spring, Maryland. Here is an interview with Sean.
Q:Where are you from?
A:I was born in Montreal. I lived there for three years
and then moved to New Zealand where I stayed until the end of
high school. My Dad was a Russian History professor and moved
to New Zealand for professional reasons.
Q:How did you start swimming?
A:I learned to swim when I was 6. I wanted to have a
swimmer's body! I swam my first race at 8. I remember doing the
50m breaststroke in 1 minute 23 seconds. I also did the 50m free
in 56 seconds - I barely made the entire length! My sister was
13 at the time and also swam. In high school I was best at
breaststroke and freestyle sprints. I won Junior Nationals
(consolation) in the 200 breaststroke (in a 33.3m pool!).
Q:Where did you go to college?
A:I moved to the U.S. when I was 17 and went to George
Mason University. GM didn't have a pool so I just swam on my own.
I graduated with a degree in Mathematics.
Q:When did you begin swimming with Masters?
A:I started swimming with Masters about 4 years ago because
I wanted to meet a woman! (Sean met Jane Kleine at a New Year's Eve
party given by Tom Denes of Ancient Mariners. They were married
while at long course nationals in August 1997.)
Q:What do you do for a living?
A:I teach mathematics at a Catholic high school.
