recipe
1 3.3-lb can M&F Plain Light Extract
1 3.3-lb can John Bull Plain Light Extract
1 lb Laaglander Plain Light Dry Extract
1 lb M&F Plain Dark Dry Extract
1 lb 64ºL Crystal Malt
2 oz Kent Goldings Leaf, 5.0% (55 min)
2 Tbsp Ground Nutmeg (10 min)
Wyeast 1056 American Ale
1 1/4 cup M&F Plain Light Dry Extract (priming)
numbers
1.072 (est.) OG
1.016 FG
7.3 (est.) % (v/v)
5 days primary (plastic)
9 days secondary (glass)
notes
  • Crush grains, steep at 160º-170º for 30 minutes.
  • The OG (and % alcohol) are estimates only. My reading was 1.058, which is obviously low. I think I may not have stirred the wort enough after topping it off.
  • I think I got the nutmeg taste just right. However, I also agree with the judges at the '96 Capital District Open, who noted that it was a bit thin on body and lacked enough other flavors to balance the nutmeg.
